BiblioTech is the nation’s first bookless (all-digital) public library in the United States. It opened in the fall of 2013 and serves the City of San Antonio and Bexar County, Texas. Through Alta Architects (formerly Muñoz & Company) I was responsible for the new Library’s logo, mascot – Techolote the owl, and both interior and exterior graphics and signage.
BiblioTech – derived from the Spanish word for library, both playful and sophisticated – is a bilingual, bi-cultural and bi-literate response to the social concern to create a learning center and interactive community space; a place that moves beyond published works. The design team worked across multiple design platforms including cultural identity and branding, to create a social experience to expand the accessibility of digital resources for underserved communities in the 21st Century. Today, BiblioTech has expanded into multiple locations across Bexar County and has served as a model for other communities of need including Laredo, Texas.
